I love everything this laptop has to offer. The ONLY thing I can say negative about it... because some days it drives me crazy.. is the fact that it's glossy all over...which leaves fingerprints and oily imprints all over where you touch.. easy fix though, just wipe down with a rag or papertowel. It's a touch-screen...in case, ya' missed that bit. I have only used the touch-screen a few times.. it's not needed...but it is neat. I've had the laptop for about a month now. The sound on this thing is great! Loud. One thing I've noticed about Toshiba's... they have descent sound. My last laptop was a Toshiba... lasted me a good 4yrs.. and probably would still be good... only I ruined it by taking it to Iraq with me years back.. so the cd/dvd area no longer works. Still have my old one though and use it for basic things like photo editing n such. Overall, I'd say this new laptop is kick@ss. The keys are quiet.. and I love Windows 7.

This laptop just arrive in my hands, and already identify 2 misleading things from amazon.

They say the computer has HDMI, well, the one that arrived didn't, has the port closed!!!

Also, it says that has the Backlit Keyboard, and is not true.

I will contact Amazon right away if they would ship something that actually has the complete specifications given.

If I don't update this, well you will know that if you want HDMI and backlit keyboard, not to buy it.

I recently purchased this laptop for my college student daughter and she loves it. It is light in weight and extremely thin but yet appears to be very durable. It has all of the "bells and whistles" one could wish for except for an optical drive in which case one can easily purchase a portable optical drive. (I would recommend the Toshiba Portable Multi-Super Optical Drive.) For normal applications the battery will last for at least eight hours before it needs to be recharged! This is a real plus for college students who use their laptops during classes. My daughter found the touch pad a little awkward for her but the addition of an inexpensive usb retractable mouse works flawlessly. Some reviewers on other sites have complained that the sound was too low but that was because they did not realize that the volume is to be adjusted by going to the Control Panel and clicking on Smart Audio/Smart Eq. to make the needed adjustments. Apparently the manual does not point this out. With features such as Windows 7, a built in web cam., full size keyboard, plenty of speed and memory, long lasting battery, a HD 13.3 inch screen, and a memory card reader, this surely makes the Toshiba T135-S1305 the perfect laptop for any college student!!!

This laptop is cute, perfect size on my lap. It's not heavy at all, which is a plus since it states that it's 5 lbs. Processor runs fairly smooth, fast. It does NOT have a webcam, I don't know why every website I searched up about this model says that it does. I got this for $100 less at Office Depot. Overall, this laptop is great for everyday use.

I've had this laptop ever since October. It works great for games and videos. The speakers built in are amazing. The only downsides to this computer are; The built-in webcam is horrible, Including the mic. The Battery, but it already states that it lasts for about 2 hours. The size. I wanted a PORTABLE computer that i could carry with me on trips or into the living room. With this computer, thats a no-go. The laptop cant fit in any of my backpacks. With only 2 hours of power, I can only have this thing with me if I'm close to a power supply. This computer is more like a desktop. If they had the same specs, but smaller, that would be amazing.

Most of it works great, but the main reason I bought the laptop was to do our church powerpoint slides. It ran great for a minute on the powerpoint projector, but then kept losing the signal and we'd lose it all and have to reboot. I updated the display driver and was really hoping that was it. No such luck. We've ended up having to go back to the old laptop that that can't even run Powerpoint 2007 which is what my desktop has...so I have to convert it all when I upload to the church's computer. I will try another laptop and hope this time it will all work the way it's supposed to. I'm hoping this is the only style that has this issue and that the other Toshiba's of this size will work for me. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

This is my 6th Toshiba Satellite laptop. Bought first one in 1998 when I was driving a truck. Have never had a problem with customer service with Toshiba as one other person has said. Lost my hard drive somewhere between Chicago and San Antonio, when I got to San Antonio on a Friday afternoon at 3:00.pm they got me in at 4:00.pm and it was fixed and I was ready to go by 6:00.pm The only time I had to wait on a part was in Charlotte, NC on a Friday for a new screen and I was at my sister's house anyway and it was ready to go by 10:00 .am., since it was all under warranty never paid a cent for repairs or parts. I am happy with this laptop because I do like the bigger screen. The one drawback that I can see is the touch pad because it is in an awkward position but you can fix that by buying a mouse and turning the touch pad off. Simple easy solution to a minor problem. The last one cost $3600.00 5 yrs ago and had a lot less on it so the price is reasonable. I would recommend this product for someone who likes a big screen.

I purchased this laptop as a replacement for my 5+ year old Dell Inspiron. Having recently had some bad experiences with Dell, I decided to try a Toshiba.

It's a good laptop for someone who isn't a road warrior-- both the size and relatively short battery life make it less than ideal for lots of travel. Both of these problems stem from its very large screen (big screens tend to consume a lot of power), which is its biggest selling point. The large screen is great for work and watching films.

On the down side, the built-in speakers provide poor sound quality, which is not a problem if you use head phones.

Another minor drawback is the mousepad, which is positioned in such a way that your wrist is likely to tap it when typing, causing the cursor to jump inappropriately. You can tweak some settings on the mousepad's sensitivity to minimize this effect.

Toshiba makes a decent laptop, but if you buy one of their products do not think for a moment that your warranty will be honored! I had an adapter cord (and transformer) that failed, and it has now been over 2 weeks that Toshiba has been "unable" to send me a replacement cord. They claim it is on "back order" with no date in sight as to when the part will be available. Of course (they tell me) I can go into a store and buy a replacement part myself (over $100) but they will not reimburse me for that - I will simply have to wait for the back order in order to have it replaced under the warranty provisions. In essence, they are telling me that - in all of North America - they cannot put their hands on one of their own power cords, even though I could just walk into any store and buy one myself! This, they say, is their "policy" - and the policy cannot be changed. In my book, this is not "policy" but rather consumer fraud - buy their product, assume that you have a warranty, but when it comes to fulfilling their warranty obligation you're told to wait indefinitely - or just go buy the replacement part out of your own pocket. Frankly, I had expected better from a company like Toshiba, and my experience has made me conclude that I should never consider buying another of their products - ever!

Although the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6992 is an impressive machine, beware of the crackling of the wonderful Harman/Kardon speakers. If you experience this issue upon purchase (as I have), there is a forum with advice from other consumers who've faced the exact same problem.

Google <[...]> and the site should appear at the very top of the results. Though there is no evidence of a foolproof solution as of yet, there are many helpful suggestions pertaining to specific drivers as well as resourceful input from other individuals who post updated information regarding current updates offered by Toshiba that may be useful in addressing the matter.

I would have loved to have rated this notebook as a five star item. However, until an update is offered by Toshiba to resolve this issue, I think a four star rating is appropriate.

I own this notebook for the past 4 weeks, and used it hard since then. I bought it at FRYS for 750 USD; at that price it's a good notebook, but at the MSRP of 900 USD it's merely average.

The good:

- 64bit edition of Windows 7

- Bright LED Screen

- ECOnomy mode

- 4 GB of faster DDR3 RAM

- 500 GB Harddrive

- Nvidia Geforce GT230M videocard

- Higher End Multimedia options & connectivity (Firewire, HDMI, eSATA)

- sensitive WI-FI card with Draft N protocol

- in-built Accelerometer that 'protects' the harddrive better versus data-loss when the netbook gets dropped or bumped

- slot-loading DVD-burner - no accidentally breaking-off the DVD-tray

- decent Audio-speaker that actually can be loud and do not loose their sound quality; to top it off, the Speakers are housed in their own vibration-padded casing.

- OPTIONAL a 12-cell battery can be purchased separately at Toshiba, which becomes a necessity if you're on the go a lot.

The bad

- Battery Life - a standard 6-cell Battery

- Battery Life (again - why? because the battery is dead after 1 hour when watching a movie, or playing a AAA-game)

- slow harddrive (takes forever to boot-up from 'cold' state)

- no Bluetooth

- no inbuilt keyboard back light (so you can see and type in the 'dark')

- comes pre-installed with a lot of "shovel-ware" (that is; installed software that's not needed because windows7 has them already integrated) that causes to prolong the boot-up process tremendously.

- Toshiba deviating from the MXM-standard (Mobile PCI-Express Module) for mobile video-cards - that means, you cannot easily replace the 3D-video-card against a better/faster one, down the road, to prolong the value of your notebook

- in-built Processor does NOT support Intel's VT - The ability to run hardware support for Virtual Machines (i.e. Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate)

Quintessence:

It's a decent system, if you get it for cheaper (as I did) than the MSRP. the Video-card is, as of time of writing, considered a "high performance" model, compared what's currently out there for laptops. The lack of BluRay drive I consider not a problem, since the 16-inch screen-size does not really require Hi-Def resolution. Speakers have a good sound, compared to other notebooks out there. What bugs me most is the Battery-Life, it's okay for "web surfing & word processing" (about 2 hours, 2.5 hours with the ECO-mode active), but if you're watching movies or playing AAA-rated games, the battery is dead in ~1 hour or less. It's highly recommended to purchase the optional 12-cell battery. What i miss the most - other than the battery life - is integrated Bluetooth (for wireless stereo headsets) and the keyboard not being back-lit (for better typing in low-light/dark). It needs to be noted that the Laptop has eSATA and HDMI connectivity, for high data-rate transfers with external harddrives or other devices, and for Hi-Def audo/video connectivity. the eSATA-port is also an USB-port at the same time, which allows to charge external devices (cellphones, MP3 players and such) while the notebook is in "sleep mode", but that is only feasible when the optional 12-cell battery is used/installed.

What upsets me the most is that Toshiba deviates from the MXM industry standard of mobile video cards, which would allow to replace the video-card against a newer one to make the Notebook last longer in value - especially if you're a avid computer gamer. But for 90% of all consumers out there this is usually not much of concern.

According to a recent survey, Toshiba and ASUS notebooks are currently the longest lasting one, whereas DELL and Hewlett-Packard notebooks have the shortest life cycles; which is also a reason why i bought this notebook.

It's worth four stars at my purchase price, but only three stars at MSRP.

Verdict:

Buy it, if you get it for cheaper than the MSRP

"Toshiba Customer Service is HORRIBLE...BEWARE!!!" 2009-12-02

I bought a Toshiba Laptop in August and I have had an absolutely AWFUL experience with Toshiba since the day I got this thing. On several occasions I have met with INEPT Technical and Customer Service staff and whenever my call was forwarded to a "Manager" the person basically reiterated the feedback from the staff, and on two occasions were RUDE and absolutely NO HELP AT ALL. When I mentioned in my last call that Toshiba Executives need to know how their customers are being treated and that I CANNOT recommend their computers to anyone in good conscience, I was told "suit yourself." To give you an idea of ALL the headaches I have undergone since I bought my computer....here is a short list:

1) My computer came with Windows Vista and kept crashing. Toshiba's Tech. people said that it was due to "glitches" with the operating system and said that I would have to back up my data and re-install the OS. Remember people, this is a NEW computer that is supposedly under warranty! Their Tech. people also had the nerve to tell me that they "did not have the training" to tell me how to back up my data and once I took it to Best Buy and PAID to have my data backed up, then they could tell me how to reload the OS!

2)Also, when I purchased the computer, there was a catalog insert in the Toshiba packaging that offered a 3-year extended warranty for 15% off. However, when I called Toshiba to buy the warranty, AGAIN, their Customer NON-Service people quoted me a price that was almost $100 more than the price in the catalog and told me that they did not know anything about the reduced price offered to purchasers of new Toshiba computers. When I told them that the catalog was sent INSIDE the Toshiba computer box that was sent to me from Amazon.com, they told me that I would need to "find a Kinkos and fax a copy of the catalog" to them "for review" and they will "see if the management will honor it"!!!!!!!!!

3)Finally, to add insult to injury -- when I purchased this computer, I was offered a "FREE" upgrade to Windows 7, but when I went online I found out that I had to PAY almost $12 for "shipping and handling". Okay, I swallowed that insult, but THEN after 25 minutes entering all the order info. the Toshiba site would not allow me to enter in my Credit Card number to pay for the thing. When I called their Customer Service people, they had NO CLUE what to tell me. After 45 MINUTES -- and after talking with 4 different people -- they FINALLY transferred me to a "Manager" who ALSO had NO idea what to do and said that "I guess the website must be having problems, so try again later"!!!

Look, all I can say to anyone who wants to buy a Toshiba is BUYER BEWARE. Their Tech. people have NO CLUE, their Customer Service is INEPT and their Management is DISGUSTINGLY RUDE!!! Dealing with Toshiba is a NIGHTMARE! Consider yourselves warned!

"A Solid Machine" 2009-11-09

It is important to note that I am reviewing the s6992 model ($899). The only real differences that I have noticed between this model and the more expensive model is the lack of a blu-ray drive and that there is no keyboard back-lighting. If these are important to you, then you should definitely get the most expensive model ($1099).

I purchased this laptop about a week ago, through tiger direct, for college use after my ASUS had failed (major hardware issues). So far, I am very impressed. There are better lengthy reviews on this model already (see Mad B's for example), so I shall keep this brief.

Pros:

- Gaming: I am not an avid gamer, but it was important to me that my new rig could handle any new games that I would want to throw at it. To be clear, games on this machine run beautifully. The 230M is a true performer, and I had no problem playing Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 (demo) on this machine at max settings. I am confident that you would be able to play more demanding games with no problems.

- Windows 7 : Loving it so far. I have had zero compatibility problems with my favorite programs, and if you are buying a new laptop, you may as well get one with the latest OS.

- Full Keyboard : Just a nice feature to have, really.

- Speakers : Great for just listening to music or watching a movie. These speakers are plenty loud and aren't tinny like most laptop speakers. (NOTE: There have been some reported problems with these speakers just not working suddenly. Before you assume it is a driver issue, turn off the laptop, take out the battery, and reinsert. This inexplicably seems to fix the problem. This has only happened to me once, but is a common issue with the A505 series.)

Cons:

- Battery Life : About 2 to 2.5 hours on a low power setting. If you are gaming, forget it. It is important to know this going in. If you don't like to have your laptop plugged into the wall most of the time, then you will want to look into some other options. If you are like me, and this is more of a desktop replacement, then no issue.

- Finger Prints! : Don't get me wrong, this laptop is very attractive...just pre-use. I am constantly wiping this thing down with a micro-fiber cloth after use, to keep it shiny. Not really that big of a deal though.

Overall, I'd give this a 9/10. If you can forgive the battery life and deal with the finger prints, you can enjoy a laptop that can handle itself pretty darn well.

"Excellent little creature!" 2009-11-24

Recently a Sony tx770p given to me had it's hard drive die on me after 2 months of really getting used to using the laptop. I have had my eye out for a long time for a replacement for it that would be comparable: 11.x screen, 1366 x 768 screen res, light weight, excellent battery life, excellent trackpad, and a particular type of keyboard that is similar to "chicklet style" but slightly different. Well, I finally found a replacement in the person of the Toshiba T115-S1100. Essentially it is a more-than-standard powerful netbook style computer.

Pro's:

1. Screen and size - LED backlit and "TruBright" ... lovely, crisp and clear! And 1366 x 768 screen resolution to boot, which is the minimum screen resolution I find actually usable when doing day to day things like browsing the internet and reading docs (both .pdf and word processing). It weighs roughly 3.5 lbs - nice and light on your shoulder as you carry it around!

2. Battery life - with everything turned off I have been able to get a little over 10 hours doing simple word processing or reading docs on this machine.

3. DDR3 RAM - the machine comes with a 2 gb chip in one slot, with another slot available to upgrade the memory. It maxes out at 4 gb. The ddr3 makes a noticeable difference in netbook level machines in my opinion.

4. Windows 7 Home - that is, a full installation of the OS, giving you way more options than Windows 7 Starter. The OS is only the 32 bit version, but it works fine considering the physical specs of the machine proper.

5. Keyboard - I personally really like the keyboard "style" used on this machine - there is spacing in between the keys a 'la "chicklet style", but the part of the keys you actually hit with your fingers are a teeny bit smaller than the bottom part of the keys, providing extra space and in general a sturdy feel when typing.

6. Trackpad - a pleasure to use. Responsive and just plain well made.

7. HDMI port - for those of you interested in such things this is a plus!

8. Web Cam - a 2 mp camera, a bit more for those of you who would use this than can be found on your average note/netbooks.

9. Intel 4500 graphics card - true, not that great, but still enough to use the hdmi port out and provide good battery life. Much more powerful than most offerings on netbooks in general.

10. ULV CPU - yes, it is single core and it is a Celeron (something many might associate with poor performance or "second rate"). However, the fact that it is an ULV means that not only is it good for battery life but it can actually crank out a fair amount of speed. This cpu runs at 1.3 ghz, 800mhz FSB, and has 2 mb of cache on it. Combine that with the ddr3 ram and a sata hard drive and you get quite a nice bit of speed for a machine its size and price.

11. Hard drive size - you get 250gb, whereas most netbook style machines give you a 160gb. Nice!

Cons:

1. Fingerprint Magnet - Argh! This thing (like many of the black colored machines produced today) attracts fingerprints to the outside of the machine and all around the outside of the screen proper. Frustrating.

2. No bluetooth - would have been a nice extra feature to add in. One should note, though, that built-in bluetooth is not an option on any of the Satellite T115 models available out there. It would be easy enough to get an external adapter though if it were really needed.

3. Mouse buttons - the mouse buttons used are "rocker style", that is, one button over the area that goes downwards on either side. I am not a fan of the rocker style buttons myself and find them difficult to use. Fortunately I had an external wireless mouse already.

4. Audio card - I have read accounts of people who have found the audio card far too weak to send noise out through the laptop speakers, although the sound through the headphones is quite fine. For me this is not an issue as I use it only with headphones. A simple "fix" for this is simply to uninstall the specific drivers for the audio card and opt for the microsoft standard drivers instead - they are reported to be a big improvement over sending sounds out of the speakers directly.

Middle-of-the-Road:

1. Heat control - it can get moderately warm when doing somewhat intensive tasks, like watching video files, for example. Nothing bad, but it is noticeable.

2. Wireless card - it is 802.11b/g rank only. This is kind of "for the par" on netbook style machines in general, but why not put in an N rank?

3. "Fusion" finish in Nova Black - the external decorations on the machine proper - it does not really excite me, but on the other hand it did not turn me off to considering to purchase the machine in general.

4. Indicator Lights - there are nine of them, and they are all on the front of the machine. If they were all active your machine would look like a small string of Christmas tree lights! :) Seriously though, it is not so bad, I simply prefer fewer indicator lights on a machine in general.

5. Standard port offerings - 3 usb 2.0 ports, mic/headphones jacks, sd card slot, vga out port, kensington lock, 10/100 ethernet.

6. USB sleep and charge - basically some software by which you can configure a certain device to draw a charge form the laptop while it is asleep. Not really something I can use or am interested in, but perhaps some may find it useful.

7. Overall Build - the machine is fairly sturdy and the screen and keyboard do not flex much at all. Good build in general overall from a "home line" product.

8. No optical drive - either internal or external. Again, I had one of these already, so this was not much of an issue, but to make dvd recovery discs you will need one.

Conclusion: Overall I must say that I am very satisfied with this little machine. It is an excellent replacement for me, basically a "super-powered netbook": that is, one that portability, connectivity and battery life of a netbook, yet has more options and "umph" than most offerings out there. For a little more cpu speed and wireless N you can pay $40 more or so and get the T115-S1105. For me, however, this machine more than does everything I would want it to do for its size and price.

As an ardent Mac person, I regretted the need to buy a PC for work. Decided to see what was available cheap and looked at this model. Couldn't believe that you could buy a decent computer for this price and feared it would be fragile and junky. Decided to give it a try anyway, knowing that Amazon backs up their stuff.

Right out the box it turned out to be very attractive and substantial, with a full keyboard and good screen. Set-up was a matter of checking a few boxes when the thing came on and it was ready to go, Got it networked in about a minute, I feared how much time it would take getting rid of all the junk that's usually installed on PCs, but this model had very little and it was easy to uninstall.

Windows 7 was a delightful surprise. Almost Mac-like in its simplicity and speed. It looked enough like previous versions of Windows so it was easy to use from the start. It wasn't constantly interrupting me for updates and bug fixes as Vista did!

Its a joy to use, with a responsive keyboard and very clear help screens. With plenty of RAM for a machine this size and a good processor, I expect years of good service from this inexpensive model

"excellent computer" 2009-12-27

Very good computer. I had a Dell Inspirion that was 5.5 years old and this is the perfect replacement since I need a more portable computer. I am a student that needs to take her computer to class via bike every day and also travel with it from Europe to the USA. Perfect for a person with basic computer skills and wants to use it everyday everywhere. Ideal for college students!!

Pros: size, speed, weight, no glare screen, easy set up and installation, comes with Windows 7, comes with a webcam (not the best, but great that it's included for skype use), very quiet/not noticable fan for cooling down the system

Cons: adapter is only 100-110V and unlike my Dell, this cannot be used in Europe (no mentioning of this anywhere), volume is low but just need to configure the sound upon arrival (very easy to do, see reviews on the black model on how to do this)

Just received it yesterday. Was the quickest easiest setup I've ever had to do.

Even on the first full charge and nearly constant use. I can;t wear it out. I haven't stopped playing on it except to sleep. It's fast, light, powerful and good looking. I upgraded another (larger) laptop with Win 7 Home. I liked it a lot. This one with the factory loaded version. I like even better.

This just may have my favorite keyboard ever. The whole thing is just great. Well, with one exception. But then I already knew about it. The sound. I sure wish they had put it on top instead of underneath. Not a real problem for me. I prefer using headphones anyhow. I like the built in mouse pad. But again prefer my wireless mouse.

I just didn't think those two little things were enough to knock a star off. I also knew there wasn't an optical drive. I've got a USB cd/dvd hard drive so that's not an issue either. Wasn't sure if I would really like the white. I do though. It's not milk white and the pattern I find interesting.

Especially appreciated there not being a ton of software to remove. That hasn't been the case with any other computer I've owned. Gotta stop rambling here. Oh, the screen is great too. I tied the eco mode. Didn't hate it but am using equal setting and still get plenty of battery time.

Update: I went to the Toshiba website to see if there were any driver updates. There were several. One was for sound. I downloaded and installed it. It's made a considerable difference in the volume of my speakers. Still lovin' this little guy. Using it more than my 17.3" laptop.

"Almost Perfect" 2009-12-08

When I bought this computer I was looking for a fast, portable laptop with long battery life. It's also nice that the battery (lasts about 5-6 hrs. depending on what you're doing) doesn't stick out the back at all, but only slightly out the bottom, giving the computer a nice incline for typing on flat surfaces. This laptop is all that plus it looks really cool in white (which is what I got). The only downsides are that there is no CD/DVD drive, and the speakers are really quiet. On 100% volume you can hear if you're in a quiet room by yourself. Be careful to turn the volume back down before plugging in headphones though, because the volume on the headphones is really loud (I put the volume on 10% while using headphones). The computer stays pretty cool and you can't hear the fan running really loud or fast. My old laptop was a 12" HP tablet, and it started having problems from overheating (which is a common problem with smaller laptops), but this one stays much cooler. It is also really lightweight.

With Windows 7, my computer can shutdown and start up in under about 10 seconds each.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone who needs to use it for email or work on-the-go. I wouldn't recommend it to play games or watch movies on, since it lacks a CD/DVD drive and good speakers.

"Amazing little machine..." 2009-11-01

I'm not a computer guru, I can't quote specs at a person, but I know when something gets the job done and this little guy does. Today I ran for six hours on battery, had another hour and a half left when I plugged in. During this time, I was surfing the web, streaming youtube and hulu, and working with Photoshop and Pro Show Producer. It even handled encoding video with Producer like a champ. It never got hot, just luke warm, it never seemed to lag, set up was a breeze, touchpad is nice and responsive, it's just been an absolute joy and it looks beautiful to boot. The speakers aren't very loud, but for everything else you get with this machine, I'm not going to quibble or take away stars for speaker volume. I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable machine with long battery life that still packs a little power.

"Blows my wife's MacBook out of the water!" 2009-11-14

I've had this amazing laptop for nearly 3 weeks now and all I can say is - It Rocks!

As a website developer I look to my laptop as my workhorse. I am constantly running multiple programs with intensive CPU usage and this machine doesn't even break a sweat.

I bought this machine to replace my aging Dell Inspiron 9400. Its graphics capabilities are awesome with the nVidia GT 230m card. The 1066 size of the Front Side Bus (this represents the bandwidth between the CPU and the RAM) makes this machine extremely fast.

One of the issues I faced with my Dell was an overly sensative wireless connection. The S6997 is strong, stable and extremely fast for wireless access.

Value: 3 years ago I paid $2700 for my Dell laptop. This Toshiba represents one of the best buys for laptops I've ever seen.

Visually this machine is a piece of art! It's piano like finish is pristine and the chrome accents really set it off (I know, not what you expect a geeky developer to say)

The 16in screen is perfect. It is vibrant, bright and - well, its just perfect!

Things That Could Be Better:

not sure why it has a modem - does anyone ever use them anymore?

the screen is a little on the reflective side - sitting in the sun makes it difficult to see the screen

speakers are not as loud as the ones on my old Dell

Things I Love:

Mouse pad can be turned off - eliminating any eroneous touches

touch sensative controls above the keyboard for media control (volume, pause, etc)

backlite keyboard - awesome!

build quality - better than a Mac!

graphics - fast and vibrant

One final comment: not really sure why the other reviewer posted comments about a different machine on this product's page??? Guess they really decided to have a bash at Toshiba.

"An outstanding laptop" 2009-10-28

Before I go ahead with my review, I want to mention that I did not purchase this laptop from Amazon. I paid the same amount as Amazon.

I have a Desktop that I built about 2 years ago with, what were at the time, Top of the line components. This laptop comes Extremely close to my behemoth of a Desktop in performance. The Amazon description of the product covers it's specifications fairly well. As such i will not go into detail of what this product has or doesn't have. I will be reviewing it's capabilities and it's performance.

I noticed that the 2 reviewers before me mentioned a couple of things that they were unsure of. I will answer those questions.

1. This laptop does not have Bluetooth, nor does it have the built in Antennas for you to add a bluetooth card. That is not a big deal as many USB bluetooth adapters cost $10-$30.

2. The timing of the Backlighting for the keyboard can be controlled in the bios.

If you are wondering whether to choose this laptop over another one with the "T6600". I suggest you choose this one. I will explain why. Although the "T6600" is 2.2GHZ, it is usually running at a slower Clock rate of 800Mhz. This processor, specifically in this laptop, is running at 2.13Ghz at a clock rate of 1066MHZ which will throw out very close numbers in a benchmark. This Processor is also designed with a lower TDP wattage. Which in turn means a longer battery life.

Since the bus is running at 1066Mhz, the memory that is put into this laptop (DDR3) is running at a matched clock rate. This brings this to an 'almost' enthusiast level of computing. For the price, it is an amazing deal.

T6600 is cheaper than the P7450, and most average users will see higher clock rate for cheaper and go with T6600. Which is why i explained the difference above.

The onboard video chipset in this laptop is a Nvidia 230M, which is the bottom of their enthusiast level Graphics chipsets. I will put it this way, it is absolutely amazing how good this chipset is. I have two SLI 8800GTX Ultras in my desktop which cost me almost twice as much as this laptop's price 2 years ago. I still haven't run into a game that has brought them down to their SLI'd knees and honestly i wasn't expecting this laptop to even come close to their prowess. It hasn't, but It's right at their tails. I downloaded some of NVIDIAs tech demos. I ran the 8800Ultra graphics demo and it ran at full native resolution of this laptop without a hitch. I have to say i was pleasently surprised. I also downloaded the 200 series tech demo and it ran as well, at about 15 or so Frames Per Second. Which is Amazing because these tech demos are made to bring out the full potential of their top of the line cards and for the chipset to even run these demos at more than 15 Frames per second simply means that you will have NO problems playing any of today's games at their full graphical settings.

It comes with Windows 7 Home premium 64bit. You can easily upgrade that within the OS to any of the higher editions but for most regular users, the Home Premium is more than enough.

I do have to agree with the bloatware. Although the bloatware isn't quite as useless and cumbersome as some of the other laptop manufacturers it still hinders the experience; atleast that's my opinion.

The keyboard keys are, in my opinion a tad bit bigger than a regular full sized keyboard. Yet are not clicky like a regular desktop keyboard, which sometimes makes it a little bit harder to know or feel your way around the keys. Although it doesn't hinder in anyway from performing any regular internet related tasks. I would suspect that people would have trouble with the keyboard at first if they are doing a lot of word processing but it shouldn't be too hard to get used to.

My least favorite part of this laptop is the touch pad. The touchpad is off to the left a little bit instead of being in the center like in most normal laptops. Also it is flush with the bezel of the laptop for aesthetic reasons. The touch pad does have a different texture then the rest of the laptop so it's not hard to find it if you are not looking at it. The left and right click buttons are also extremely big, which is a turn off for me personally. But some people might like that. I believe the touchpad is also something that will take a bit of getting used to.

The speakers are fairly nice. I am not an audiophile and if you are buying a laptop for it's audio prowess then you should stop right now. A 1 inch speaker will never be as good as a full sized computer speaker or other Home Audio equipment. Although for being so tiny, they do sound very good. I am not disappointed with the speakers.

Overall this laptop is a steal for the price that it is going for right now, I would give this laptop a 8 out of 10.

The 16in TFT display is extremely bright and crisp, and even on its lowest brightness setting it can still be easily seen in bright lights with minimal glare. The lighted keyboard is really handy, although I can't seem to be able to change the amount of time that it stays on. The touchpad is nice and responsive, and multi-touch is really handy for photo editing, etc. It sometime gets in the way if you accidentally rest a finger on it while moving the cursor. /the touch controls on the top of the keyboard are realy nice, and along with the media/volume controls, it also has an 'eco-button' which lowers the power consumption of the laptop. The speakers are wonderful, not great bass but what are you to expect from 1in speakers? They aren't too tinny and sound great even at loud volumes, and i can tell you, for laptop speakers, these suckers are loud! Win7 pre-installed is a nice touch, but Toshiba also decided to install alot of Microsoft and it's own bloat ware, not a huge issue, but most of it isn't necessary.

The computer had a great list of features and for the price was a very good deal. Two weeks and the hard drive failed. Toshiba did replace it free but I had to go to a repair shop of their choice 30 miles form me. The repair took a week. I think I will go back to Dell next time.

This laptop was just what we were looking for: easy to use, starts up lighting fast, and can multi-task several programs at the same time. Because it contains the newer DDR3 RAM, which has twice the channels of DDR2, it should provide us with more years of use.

I was told by several people that Toshiba has a great reputation for quality, and we are very pleased with this computer.

My wife and I got this Toshiba laptop to replace an aging laptop at home, where the extent of our mobility requirement is that we occasionally move it from room to room. (If we simply wanted a computer for a fixed location, we probably would have purchased a desktop model for somewhat less money and/or better performance.) Beyond normal uses such as spreadsheets and publishing programs, the 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 T6600 processor is plenty powerful enough for typical household needs, including photography work and most games. If you are a serious gamer, however, you will want more processing power and a discrete graphics card, which this laptop doesn't have. Unlike most netbooks or "ultra-thin" laptops (which slot between netbooks and traditional laptops), this unit comes with 4GB of memory, which should remain sufficient for several years, and a solid 400GB hard drive. That, along with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, should last you years.

The large (16 inch) display is bright, crisp and a joy to behold. I've read some complaints about the keyboard, but we like it. There is a numeric keypad, which really saves time if you frequently work with numbers. The touchpad is not located in the middle of the unit, which troubles some people (although it is easy to get used to). If you look carefully at an image of the keyboard, you will see that the touchpad is located roughly in the middle of what I would call the traditional keyboard area (from the left shift key to the right shift key), which is where you will normally find your hands when typing. The two internal speakers are simply great for a laptop, but don't expect miracles from 1.5 inch speakers. The "fusion" finish looks sharp, but it attracts fingerprints like honey attracts bees.

This Toshiba comes with a six-cell battery and an advertised 3 hours and 20 minute battery life, although we got closer to 2 hours and 30 minutes of battery use with normal settings. Regardless, we don't run this on battery power that often, and if what you want is really long battery life, you should look at a netbook or ultra-thin. The Windows 7 software is 64-bit, which is where personal computing is headed, so that's an advantage. However, you may find some compatibility problems with older software or hardware such as printers (many printer manufacturers will have compatible drivers available shortly).

Before you rule this laptop in for your situation, however, you should first rule out various alternatives. If mobility is a key concern for you, this isn't the right choice. Yes, you can pick it up and carry it around, but at 15 inches in width and over seven pounds, I wouldn't want to lug it around for long. For, say, a college student who wants to take notes in class every day (and who can accept the limited processing power of less capable machines), a smaller, lighter computer with much better battery life is a better choice. Get a netbook, or maybe an ultra-thin. If you are a serious gamer or video editor, then you need a high-end machine with a discrete graphics card and a more powerful processor. Just be prepared to pay up for it. And if you have no mobility requirement, consider a desktop.

However, if what you want is a desktop replacement laptop with plenty of memory, good processing power, speed, a large screen, a roomy hard drive, lots of ports, etc., then this laptop features an attractive combination of these features in a relatively economical package. It will be the right computer for many people.

"Stunning, Powerful - Best Laptop I've Owned by Far!" 2009-12-25

Cosmetically, the Qosmio looks like a technological piece of art; under the hood, it gets even better. Every time I lay my hands on it, I'm thrilled I made this purchase.

I'd been hoping to put off buying a new laptop but the screen on my old HP was failing and I just can't justify sinking money into obsolete tech. I convinced myself I was willing to live with the funky lines running through my screen in favor of being frugal, but with each malfunctioning pixel, it was clear I had to buy a replacement soon.

If you're like me, a new laptop isn't something to be taken lightly. It's a decision I'll have to live with a good many years, so selecting the right model is important since I'll be using it on a daily basis. Well, I'd like to say I did exhaustive research comparison shopping every new laptop, but that simply wasn't the case. I had two basic criteria that eliminated 99% of the laptops on the market: I wanted the largest screen possible and a lighted keyboard.

Enter Qosmio...

(Insert angelic harps here)

Thankfully, Amazon makes it easy to search laptops by attribute like screen size, and the first laptop that came up on my search was the Qosmio x505-Q850 -- the pictures were more reminiscent of an elegant sports car than laptop -- it was love at first sight. The screen was a whopping 18.4 inches, which is huge for a laptop, and much to my surprise, it even had a lighted keyboard!!!

(Angelic choir join the harps and crescendo for dramatic effect...)

Could finding my perfect laptop be this easy? "Calm down," I tell myself, "looks aren't everything." The price isn't cheap, yet it's nearly half the cost of Alienware, it's nearest rival in specs and looks. Excitedly reading the product info, I was thrilled to see the Qosmio's feature set is just as brilliant on the inside as it is on the outside. With the latest quad core processor, a blazing fast solid state drive for the OS, a 2nd SATA drive, 6gb of memory, the latest NVIDIA graphics card, Bluetooth, HDMI output and Blu-Ray drive, this Qosmio is a powerhouse indeed.

Delving deeper, I learned this new Qosmio had just been released and was in limited supply. Even buying direct from Toshiba was a 2 month wait. Amazon had a few in stock but quickly sold out. With more pixels disappearing on my old HP, I kept a keen lookout hoping someone would get the Qosmio in stock soon. I was hoping to buy at Amazon and get triple points on their credit card (every 2500 points gets me a $25 gift card and triple points on a laptop would be near 6000!!) but alas, a different retailer got in a small quantity, and much as I hated to do it, I cheated on Amazon and made my purchase elsewhere.

When my Qosmio arrived, it was a euphoric experience. The box is red and black with a huge red Q on it and the same detailed design that's on the laptop itself. As I peeled back the box tab to open it, the inside flap had little red letters that said "Enjoy your laptop." My heart fluttered, "I will," I thought to myself, "Don't you worry."

Angelic harps reach their apex as I open the Qosmio box. And there it was -- emerging through light beams -- with its high gloss black finish glistening, and points of light sparkling off red metallic accents. I challenge anyone to find a more stunning looking laptop.

Okay, so literary embellishments aside, this really is a great laptop. And Windows 7 is pretty awesome too. Boot up time is lightening fast; 45 seconds tops from the moment I hit the power button and I can click on anything and get going instantly. And this new processor is a total beast too. Photoshop CS4 opens near instantly. A 100gb backup took barely over an hour. And rendering video editing is blazing fast too. I'm not a gamer, so I have nothing to report there, but judging by everything else, it ought to be equally fast in that department.

"Gaming Laptop" is just a euphemism for Fast!

If you see a computer that's touted for "gamers" don't assume that's all it's good for. "Gaming computer" just means fast, and who doesn't want a fast computer?? I've seen several reviews that did speed tests pitting this new Qosmio against its rivals and it outperformed them with ease. Granted, it was the only one with this new processor and as others follow suit, the speed comparisons will level off.

Blu-Ray Rom vs Burner

ROM basically means this drive plays Blu-Ray disks but doesn't burn them. (It does, of course, burn DVD+-RW and CDs.) At first, I was disappointed Qosmio didn't have a Blu-Ray burner. But then I realized I'd rather archive all my video to MPEG4 or WMV and watch it directly off Media Share. I already use Media Share to listen to all my music, so why not do the same with video too? It's way more convenient to access MP3 files digitally than it is to load a CD into a player, just like it's easier to do backups with external hard drives as opposed to disks. Digital files are just faster and more convenient, so a Blu-Ray burner may already be meaningless for my purposes.

HDMI Output

One of my favorite features of the Qosmio is the ease with which it can be connected to my 50" plasma! Just run an HDMI cable from your computer to your plasma and it's good to go! Audio is automatically cut from the laptop and plays out the TV instead. And the picture is full 1080p HD! Play any video clip, surf the web or watch a Blu-Ray movie all on your plasma!! Very cool!! Oh, and in case you're wondering, the Qosmio uses a standard HDMI cable, not the mini size seen on camcorders. And Qosmio automatically detects the HDMI signal and turns on an off the external display automatically. You can have both screens active at the same time, or choose between the two. Combined with my Philips Wireless HDMI transmitter and it all couldn't be easier to use.

Lighted Keyboard

I've read some forums where people were upset the keyboard doesn't stay lit all the time and turns off after so many seconds. NOT TRUE -- the keyboard CAN be set to stay on all the time. On your Qosmio, just go to: >Start >Toshiba >Utilities >HWSetup >Illumination >then under "Keyboard Backlight," click the radio button "FN" then check the box "On." After you reboot, you'll be able to turn the keyboard on and off by using the "FN" + "Z" keys. Personally, I have my keyboard set to stay on all the time, and naturally, it turns off automatically when the computer is shut down. It's also worth mentioning that the keyboard itself is very smooth and QUIET! I don't know about you, but clackety-clack keyboards drive me nuts! No reason why they can't all be virtually silent like this Qosmio's. I have to strain just to hear a sound -- perfect!

No Crapware

I hate it when I buy a new computer and it's loaded with garbage programs that basically amount to advertisers littering all over my new hard drive. Thankfully, Qosmio comes with very little corporate garbage under the hood -- a Microsoft Office trial, Quickbooks, Toshiba Online Backup -- oh, and that crappy Norton I got rid of on my first bootup. Aside from that, it's pretty much a clean install with only the necessities, and I'm thankful for that. I'll install my own programs, thank you very much! Incidentally, Toshiba did a good job of including some helpful utilities and a decent DVD/CD burning program, so kudos there.

Harman / Kardon Speakers

No, these aren't going to fill a room or blow anyone's hair back, but compared to other laptops I've encountered, these speakers are great! If I'm out on the go, they're just fine and plenty powerful. But when I'm home, I do plug in a set of Altec Lansings for a fuller, dynamic sound. But truth be told, I don't listen to music off my laptop. But I do have it connected to my DirecTV receiver and listen to music on my home theater system via Media Share. There's nothing like it!

Eco-Mode

I applaud Toshiba for including this feature but it's nothing I'll ever use. Basically, you can setup this feature so that at a push of a button, your the Qosmio will conserve energy and you can feel good about reducing your carbon footprint. That's all well and good but I didn't spend 2 grand for a sluggish computer. I paid for speed and I want speed, I'll deal with my carbon footprint elsewhere. I take the bus most places, so I have most people beat right there. I'll burn my laptop as fast as I please; thanks much.

Face Recognition Login

Yes, you heard me -- this Qosmio has a built in web cam that's good for video calls via Skype, but it also does one better -- the built in web cam also enables the use of face recognition software in lieu of a password for login! Cool!

Fingerprints

The high gloss finish of this Qosmio is stunning but it also picks up fingerprints with ease. Personally, I don't mind. I wouldn't want to sacrifice the Qosmio's lux look and don't mind wiping it down to keep it shiny and clean. Besides, we've all seen the reports that say people's keyboards have more germs on them than a public toilet, so it's a good thing to wipe your laptop down frequently no matter what.

Solid State Drive

I credit Qosmio for wanting to be on the cutting edge but the solid state drive on this thing is way too small -- only 64gb. It does have a 2nd 320gb SATA which beats most competitors since it spins at 7200rpm. But the SSD is still small for my taste. To make matters worse, the partitions only give 47gb of usable space. The rest is allocated to a Recovery partition and a hidden partition that contains a backup image that can restore your computer to its out of box state. This could be helpful if you're on the go and something happens but I did make my DVD backup disks as well just for good measure. I don't mind how the partitions are laid out, I just need a bigger SSD and plan to upgrade as soon as the price drops from the stratosphere to something reasonable. But having said that, the speed of this drive is amazing so I'll gladly make do in the meantime. I installed my most taxing programs on the SSD and moved all my documents to the secondary SATA. Thankfully, Toshiba included an easy utility that helps migrate the user files to the secondary drive so as to help conserve space on the SSD.

Windows 7 64bit - NOT 32bit

The description says 32bit but this is actually 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded with ease to Ultimate and it did take less than 10 min just as advertised.

The q850 is an excellent price to performance ratio buy, no other laptop company could seem to provide such a good ratio. I have always been a fan of Toshiba laptops and my last 3 laptops were all satellites. I usually only go for desktops, i like to build them, but considering my deployment to Iraq i couldn't take my 45 pound tower out here. I needed something mobile yet powerful enough to play games and handle power hungry applications, and let me tell you this laptop does it. the core i7 720QM is comparable to my phenom II 935, even with the i7's lower clock speed.

I was sceptical about the video performance at first considering it was only packing a gts 250m, the best mobile vprocessor being the gtx 280m. but i did my research and found out it was packing GDDR5 VRAM which runs a lot better at higher resolutions ie 1920X1080 (HD+) in games comparable to the gtx 260m, although sucked less power. I run most games fluid with almost max settings, borderlands, Fallout 3, Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age, ex.

The performance in game is also due to the faster Ram clock speeds, turbo mode, and the SSD.

Like people have said before me the SSD only has 47 GB on it not the 64 they propose, but once you remove most of the junk from the system it frees up enough space to load applications and a couple of games on to the SSD. the HDD is running at 7200 RPM which is a fast for a laptop considering most laptop HDDs run at 5400. Its great for storage or installing less used or important applications.

Blu-ray movies look excellent on the giant screen.

The side touch panel makes it easy to stop music while in game without alt tabbing.

The on board Wifi works great for me, I pick up signal even through my metal walls.

I haven't tested the battery power, but from what i have seen so far beats the hell out of any HP laptop.

I would recommend getting a gaming mouse, the touch pad that's is built into the system isn't that great, but it will get the job done. I myself have the Razor Orochi gaming mouse.

I would also recommend getting a set of speakers and a sub considering this model only has speakers in it and they sound great but not for the music enthusiast.

The laptop looks very sleek and the back lit keyboard is awesome at night time.

Windows 7 has way better performance than vista on this laptop.

Overall this laptop was a very good buy, even though it took me forever to get it out here to Iraq.

I'm thrilled with my new laptop. It boots from the SSD and so has amazing speed, has an extra drive for storage, a great screen, a nice keyboard, and a great look. It supports "hardware virtualization" which means if you use VMWare Workstation or such, it can take advantage of the enhancements which make your VMs much faster than "normal."

I can think of only three annoyances with this laptop:

1) They keyboard has backlighting, which turns off after a (slightly configurable) time. I'd like to be able to set it to "stay on until I manually turn it off." You have to hit a key to get them to light up again, but by then you've hit the wrong key - annoying.

2) The power supply connects via one of the older standard type plugs, meaning without the "swivel" that some newer laptops are coming with. It just means that it will get "worn" and "bent out of shape" faster than you'd like.

3) The "finish" is just too glossy. Like an iPod - it's beautiful until you touch it. You'll have fingerprints all over it, which is decidedly not beautiful anymore. I find myself wanting to "wash and wax" my laptop like I did my car when I was a teenager :)

This is a very nice entertainment notebook. It's only real competition at the moment is the HP Pavilion dv8t Quad.

As regards the question another reviewer raised, the CPU is 1.6GHz base speed, but it can automatically boost its speed up to 2.8GHz when you are doing something compute-intensive. So you get the best of both worlds: low heat and longer battery life because most of the time you won't need the higher speed, but also a much faster CPU when you do need that.

My only negative comment about this specific deal is that it is overpriced. You can buy the exact same configuration from Toshiba Direct for $1899.99, which is a lot less than what Amazon is currently asking. The catch is that Toshiba Direct is quoting shipment in 4 to 5 weeks!

"Known Bug with Windows 7" 2009-12-06

I did weeks of research, (as with 90% of the items I purchase). And decided on this particular laptop because it had all of the desired specifications I needed for video and music editing. I've had the laptop for less than a week and I'm strongly considering returning it to the manufacturer.

First reason, I don't have administrative writes to all parts of my hard drive. I can't save files on my c:\ drive except in my "user" folder. I kept getting an error message stating: "You don't have permissions to save to this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission." However, I am logged in as the administrator. The only folder I'm able to write to on the hardrive is my user folder. I called Toshiba's technical support and they informed me that this laptop has a known issue/bug with Windows 7. In order to fix you must do a full recovery of your hard drive but make sure you back it up first! Apparently the system has a hidden partition which allows you to rest it back to it's original factory settings. By removing the battery for 2-3 hours while it's plugged into the wall,(ok whatever).

Second reason, I'm not used to the Toshiba's "System Control Panel" located next to the typing keys. I find myself mistakenly hitting one of those 8 buttons all the time while I'm typing. Which launches either; an application, disk drive, mute button or something else.

Third reason is the touchPad used to move your mouse curser. I find it's in an awkward place for me,(It's slightly off-center and I'm not sure why, or maybe I'm just slightly off center). I find as I'm typing, if my hands slightly touches the TouchPad, the cursor jumps to weird places anywhere on the screen. One nice feature is you can disable the touchPad as your typing.

I'm not impressed with the Harman/Kardon speakers. I thought the quality was just okay. Whenever I turned the speakers up as loud as they would go,(to watch a movie on the beautiful screen), the sound would crack as I increased the volume - and once it's turned all the way up, the volume would go up and down unexpectedly.

Overall, I find that this laptop is not really a "portable" laptop. I purchased it as a desktop replacement so I don't have to be confined to my office. I figured I can work other places in my house and this is fine. But I can't see myself taking this one to a coffee shop because it's just too big and heavy. As a matter of fact, I find it very difficult to work with this computer while in my pajama's in bed.

But in all fairness, this laptop is a "Beast" with all of it's power, that's why it gets 3 stars. Surfing the Internet is smooth and seamless. Anything that requires large amount of resources like video editing and gameing should not be a problem, this laptop should handle all of your multi-tasking with ease.

I will try to fix my bug and let you know if I was successful and also if I decided to keep or return it.

Well, it took 2 weeks to get this all the way to South Africa, but boy was it worth the wait. This baby is awesome. I also play Aion, and can play it with everything on high...better than my Q6600 quad-core PC with AMD 4870 GFX could handle. The finish on this laptop is superb and the keyboard is nice and light to the touch.

The sound isn't that awesome, but is sufficient to watch a blu-ray when you need to.

All in all, a great laptop and the GTS250M 1GB DDR5 does my gaming just fine.

I bought this computer from amazon. I've been using it for about a week when suddenly it just die. I called the tech support and told me to set my computer on an out-of-box state, I did it twice and didn't solve the problem, so I sent it to the toshiba depot and the diagnostic was the video card has problems.

I think is because an overheating problem with the gpu, I think it needs a better cooling system. I used it as the manual says, on a flat surface, no dust, etc... and even with that I got the problem.

So it is a good computer but toshiba has to improve its cooling system in their laptops.

I got this laptop at the Black Friday price of $469.00. It's a great medium size laptop with an AMD M500 which performs about on par with a Core 2 Duo T6600. It also has a 10 key which is really nice. With 3g of RAM upgradeable to 8 (I boosted mine to 4) and 320g of storage it will perform well and store all the music and video I need. I gave 4 stars because it could have a better video card and I prefer the older Toshiba style Touchpad that is indented rather than flush with the casing. I believe that the 32 bit OS it comes with will only recognize 4 gigs of RAM, so it is odd that they assume you could beef up the RAM to 8 with a 32 bit OS. I installed Windows 7 64 bit so problem solved. Also,it is Toshiba! Great quality. If you are looking for a lower priced laptop with a good amount of storage and modern processing ability, this one could definitely fit the bill! A manual to turn it on? Seriously???

I received this beauty 3 days ago and I am very pleased with the purchase. The design is gorgeous and so light weight compared to my old laptop.

As others have mentioned the mouse buttons are pretty substandard but everything else meets my expectations. I am not a gamer so that wasn't part of my criteria but I must say the display is beautiful.

I am not a willing windows user except I will need it for working from home but I will be installing Ubuntu to dual boot. I will review my success after Christmas.

"I hope you don't need to have it repaired" 2009-12-17

We bought this product through Amazon in November, 2009. It showed up a few days before Thanksgiving. I got it all set up for my wife with all software installed and ready to go. It worked for exactly 7 days and then the embedded wireless adapter stopped working. The device disappeared from the system. On November 27th, I called Toshiba and, of course, they told me to reinstall Windows. I said 'The wireless device is GONE, Windows doesn't even detect it any more'. She said 'OK, do you want to return it for repair?'. I said yes and two days later received a box to send in the unit. The unit went in for repair on 12/2, they acknowledged receipt on 12/7 (even though it was 2-day shipping!) and shortly afterward, the status showed 'on hold for parts'. Well, as of today, 12/16, it is still in the same status. When I originally asked how long it would take to repair the unit, I was told 10 days. Well, today is the 10th day and no progress since the 9th. I called to ask when I can expect to get the machine back and I was put on hold for over an hour. Eventually, they DROPPED my call. My advice to you is don't buy Toshiba. The hardware failed almost immediately, the repair depot is slow to acknowledge receipt, and the product is obviously poorly made or they would not have such a long wait for parts and in their phone queue. I WISH I HAD NOT BOUGHT THIS PRODUCT! I ADVISE YOU TO LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE.

"Great laptop--except for disappearing wireless card" 2009-11-23

I bought this laptop after reading the reviews here. Took it on a weekend trip and LOVED the light weight and battery life. (At one point, I was both charging my phone and reading documents on a three-hour bus ride with no problems.)

This afternoon, however, the wireless internet suddenly stopped working. The Realtek wireless card does not even appear among the internet devices any more. I have been calling tech support for two hours, restored the system twice, and attempted to reinstall the wireless driver from the Toshiba website to no avail. From the tech support forums, it looks like some Toshiba laptops ship with bad wireless cards.

Again, it's a great laptop otherwise, but having no wireless internet is a deal killer for me. I'll be returning this laptop and getting another brand instead.

"Some small issues..." 2009-11-21

Just got this laptop and there are some issues...like the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the page in Internet Explorer 8 doesn't move, though it's fine in Firefox. I tried removing IE8, but there is no add/remove option for it on this system, only to kind of disable it. It's very annoying not to be able to scroll down the page. Does anyone know how to fix this? Also, I hooked up my Logitech mouse (which works fine on my old Toshiba), but on this one is all over the place. I added it as a new device, but that didn't fix the problem. Maybe I have to install the CD it came with on this laptop as well in order for it to work properly. Any help you guys can offer would be much appreciated!

UPDATE: Thanks for your help everyone! If you can believe it... turned out that my mouse was not the problem. I ran Malwarebytes anti-spam program and they found 8 high-level viruses on my brand new laptop. I was stunned since it was just out of the box for only three days. So I called Toshiba tech support and a very nice woman told me she felt that the second party vendor that Amazon shipped it from (Beach Camera) may have configured the computer before sending it to me and accidentally got viruses on there. She suggested that we completely restore my brand new laptop to its out-of-the-box state and walked me through each step on how to do that. After the whole process was done and everything was set up, I immediately ran Malewarebytes full scan and again, it found the SAME 8 high-level viruses on it (which it fully removed, thankfully). I (and others) then concluded and tended to agree with the Toshiba tech support person who said that Beach Camera may have inadvertently put viruses on there. But I am not so sure that's the case and it could even be Microsoft or another company that put viruses on it from the factory before shipping it to me. Scary and upsetting considering I felt like I had just lost over $700 on a spankin' new gorgeous computer. I called Beach Camera and they were totally professional and even though they don't typically exchange or make refunds on computers, they tried to make accommodations for me. I told them I would give it a couple more days and see how the laptop was working and then decide if I would ask for a refund or exchange. After running Malewarebytes a few more times and getting clean scans, I really feel that it was not necessarily Beach Camera's fault, but probably something (as I previously mentioned) to do with Microsoft or another company that infected this new machine before it was ever mine.

FINAL WORDS: It's now running great, my mouse is fully configured and doing fine, the IE8 scrolling problem is resolved and I am thrilled with my new purchase, which I got in the beautiful NOVA white. It looks like a piece of art and I love its small, amazingly thin stature. It's so much lighter than my previous Toshiba Satellite (15.6 with +++ added weight due to extended life battery and case). I travel frequently back and forth from California to New Jersey and just took my first trip home for Thanksgiving with this baby and it was a joy to carry! I highly recommend the Toshiba Satellite T135-S1310RD TruBrite 13.3-Inch, but just beware if you notice any crazy symptoms after opening it, the kind mine was exhibiting -- and yours may have also come from the factory pre-installed with viruses on it, but I certainly hope you don't have to go through what I did!

I love this little laptop. I had actually bought an Asus Eee PC netbook (1.6 Ghz single core processor) and it just didn't have the speed to do what I needed, so I bougth this Toshiba. I wanted something lightweight that I could take to school without weighing me down. I also needed a long battery life because many of my classes are 3 hours long. Unfortunately I also needed something with decent processing power, which the Asus netbook did not provide.

My last laptop was a Toshiba Satellite (3yrs old, running on 2.7 Ghz dual core processor and 3GB Ram) and I can't tell a speed difference between this one and my old one. While it won't be as fast as some of the bigger workhorse computers, it handles multitasking with ease and rarely any noticeable lag. This little PC is lightweight, I realisticly get about 7.5-8 hrs of battery life in the eco mode (I don't know how they get the 9.5hr rating), and it's got enough speed to handle the multitasking my graduate classes require.

I also plan to upgrade the ram, because I'm running 64bit windows and I'm a little geeky so I like the best specs possible (however it is fast enough for me as it is), and also buy an external optical drive/burner. The sound was low, but Toshiba's website has an updated driver that improves that significantly, but I still wouldn't buy this for the sound quality. The touchpad is sensitive when set at factory specifications, but you can turn off all the frills if they annoy you.

"Great value, good notebook, excelent battery life" 2009-11-18

Overall the T115-S1105 notebook is very good. I love the display, the size, and weight of the notebook. The dimensions are just one inch larger than the Toshiba netbook NB205.

For the price it's a step up from a netbook. I've been debating for days between the T115 and the NB205. The NB205 is awesome, but the Windows 7 Starter and other limitations (smaller screen, DDR2 memory instead of DDR3, a/b/g/n wireless on the T115, HDMI in the T115, etc.) made me decide for the T115. For few dollars more you get a full blown mini-notebook and almost the same dimensions of a netbook (if you opt for the T115 instead of the bigger brother T135). This does not take away the merits of the NB205, and I'm still considering getting one for my wife.

PERFORMANCE: As far as performance, it seems to be fine for browsing and playing video. I was able to play 720p video without problems (haven't tried 1080p yet). I performed a PASSMARK test for this unit (CPU Intel SU2700) and I got an overall Passmark Rating of 312 (Passmark CPU Rating: 471, 3D Mark: 122, Disk Mark: 238) which is not great, but should be ok for mundane tasks. I was surprised that the performance of the HD was over 30MB/s (for read/write speed), which is due probably to a SATA II interface for the 5400 rpm MK2555GSX Toshiba HD. So, overall the performance is slightly above what you would get from an ordinary netbook.

Note also that Amazon is selling 2 models of the T115, one with a Celeron processor, and this one (the S1105) with the ultra low voltage one core SU2700 for US$ 30 more. The SU2700 unit is also supposed to last over 9 hours on battery, which puts the Celeron unit not much behind at over 8 hours..

DISPLAY: The display is very nice, it's a glossy display with 1366x768 pixels. I was worried with the size of the fonts, but the multi-touch pad makes it very easy to increase the size of the fonts when reading a document or surfing the web. One drawback: the screen opens up to 125 degrees aproximately only, so you may need to lift up the notebook a bit depending on your position if you want to have the best display angle. It seems fine so far to me.

KEYBOARD: The keyboard is also ok, not as nice as the NB205, but I got used to it, and now I can type very quickly and even enjoy it. It does feel a bit warm on your left hand when you are plugged in (same for the bottom of the unit).

NOISE LEVEL: I also like that the notebook is quite silent, this is important to me, and I wish all laptop reviewers would always comment on that. Although it has a ULV processor, the unit does have a fan, that you just slightly hear when booting up or playing video. It doesn't seem to run otherwise.

BATTERY: The battery seems to last forever. I've been able to work (on/off) quite few hours without needing to recharge it, and I still had some battery left. I also like the Eco Utility that optimizes the use of the battery. I haven't been able to prove the 9 hours plus benchmark by working unplugged for straight 9 hours, but it does seem to be true if you have the Eco Utility turned on. Additional observation: in my brief performance tests with Passmark, the Eco Utility turned on seems not to affect much the overall performance of the unit, so I will let the ECO turned on for the time being. One more thing: for some reason, I wish the power plug was on the left side of the unit as with all my other notebooks to date. The power cable plugging from the right side seems always to be in the way, but maybe is just me as I'm right handed and I don't like to see that near my mouse.

WIRELESS: excellent, rock solid so far, no problems connecting with my network and rock solid connection with very high speeds (also, abgn, which is great).

SHELL: The notebook looks great, but I got the black unit (the other colors seem not to be available yet), and you will need to get used to clean it in a daily basis as I have fingerprints all over the unit in the end of the day. I wish the white unit was available and I would have gone for that.

There are 2 drawbacks I've found so far, the buttons of the touchpad are very clunky, and the speaker volume of the unit is way too low. In order to prevent using the touchpad buttons, I have to normally use the tap feature to select, start application, etc. In regards to the volume, I attained a small improvement going to the audio settings for the Conexant Pebble audio drivers and turning on the Loudness feature (by checking the Loudness checkbox on properties). It helps, but it does not solve the problem, I hope Toshiba can do something to improve the audio via some new audio drivers (if that is even possible). Meanwhile, I will have to carry a small headset with me if I really want to hear something playing on the web or listening to music. I believe that if Toshiba had solved these 2 issues before launching this product, the T115 would be a total killer considering the price point.

You can find a review of the bigger T135 brother of this notebook at the Laptop Magazine [...] Those guys do a an excellent job, and you can maybe find a bit more as it relates to some similarities to this unit.

I'm curious what others have to say. So, I hope more people leave their reviews.

UPDATE Nov 4, 2009

I did some video playback testing (connecting with my 42 inch HDTV via HDMI) last night and was able to:

- Play 1080p video: I downloaded a 1080p trailer of Pirates of the Caribbean. It played perfectly on my HDTV screen. No problems with the sound or video. No motion interruption or stuttering. Shows that the Intel GMA GS40 works very well for HD playback.

- Play 360p and 480p video from Hulu: I was able to watch 'Modern Family' and 'The Middle' tv series in my HDTV. I had some initial issues, but then I rebooted the machine and let just the browse running. The playback wasn't perfect, but very watchable. You would notice some motion blur here and there. This is probably due to the flash nature of the video that relies less on the GMA (Graphic Media Accelerator). It seemed to improve a bit when I played just in the TV instead of both (video e notebook) by using the F5 function key.

Overall, very impressive for this little notebook!!

UPDATE Nov 13, 2009:

A couple more observations:

- I was able to solve the weak audio issue with the Conexant audio device. I just went to Device Manager, and deleted the drivers, now the sound level is very good. This work around was posted on the Toshiba forum and it's a perfect solution until Toshiba provides new and more powerfull drivers. I'm very pleased with this, because now I don't need the headsets anymore, and the volume level is very similar to my other notebooks.

- I noticed that with Eco utility turned on the notebook is very sluggish. So, I decided to use the Balanced setting instead. The battery life is still excellent, maybe not as good as with Eco on, but I didn't do any measurements. I will reserve the Eco for transcontinental flights. I also noticed, that you need to reboot the notebook for the new setting to kick in and provide a better performance (even though I had changed back to Balanced, for some reason the CPU speed wasn't being affected until rebooting).

I guess I would give the notebook 4.5 stars now!

"I like it in spite of its issues" 2009-11-16

First the problems:

1. The pre-installed Norton Internet Security did not activate properly, and prevented any network connections. It took a couple of hours to figure that one out. I uninstalled Norton and the problem disappeared.

2. The audio driver that ships with the laptop didn't work well resulting in low volume. I deleted the driver and installed the default Windows driver which took care of that issue.

3. When I tried to run a full screen video, I got a warning that the computer was overheating and needed to be returned to the manufacturer. I called Toshiba, spent 20 minutes on the phone, received a prepaid shipping box from UPS, and am awaiting its return. Apparently the fan isn't working as it should.

In spite of issues I like this little laptop. In the limited time I've had with it I found the battery life to be as good as advertised. The keyboard is not difficult to use, and the touchpad is the largest I've had on any laptop. I've seen some complaints about the button bar. I don't use it much as I prefer to customize the touchpad, but seems to work OK. The video camera is OK, but slower than what I have seen on some netbooks. I didn't test it extensively because of the fan issue. I have checked the Toshiba forums, and the only issue reported with this laptop is the low sound volume mentioned above. So it seems my issue is just one of those things. I'm looking forward to getting it back and expecting to get several good years of service from it.

My initial impressions of Toshiba service are also good.

i have a T115 and i love it. i had an ACER aspire One with the Atom N270 processor and the battery only lasted for about 3 hours. (half way from Atlanta to LAX which was unacceptable.) as i make 6+ hour flights all the time i needed something with the battery power to get it done. The T115 really meets that need. the battery lasts at least 8.5 hours each time i have used it until it was drained and the ergonomics of the 11.6" form factor are almost the same as my full sized laptop. (my ACER was the 8.9" 1024x600 screen res was trying at times...) i upgraded mine to 4 GB or ram it was straightforward and only cost $30.00. my T115 came with a copy of Windows 7 home premium installed however i was not able to use all of the ram i installed because it was 32bit so i upgraded to 64bit. the windows 7 key from the bottom of my laptop worked fine for 64bit and all of the Toshiba software that was pre-installed on the computer has 64 bit versions available on the Toshiba website. also my system has a higher windows experience score now that i am running 64bit i now get a 3.2 windows score instead of the 2.9 i had when running 32bit. all in all this will make a great new companion for me as i travel and do presentations. one gripe, the finish is super shiny and fingerprints and scratches will be a serious problem. order a neoprene sleeve for it as soon as you can. also as i travel quite a bit it would have been nice if it was a bit more rugged but at the price point it is sold at one cannot expect the laptop to be made of metal like more expensive ultralights in the category.

This is my 5th Laptop and 7th Computer in my life. I had previously owned two PC's - Dell and HP.

Laptops i owned are Acer - 4100, Lenovo 3000 N100, IBM ThinkPad T40, T60, T61, Apple Macbook Pro.

And this is my 50th Purchase from Amazon.

I bought this Laptop after making a tough comparison with ASUS X5. This one as others mentioned have lot of -ves.

First let me list all the +ves.

1. Bright Screen.

2. Good battery life ( but in low feature as advised you can get max of 7 hrs).

3. Speaker sound is OK -after you make the adjustments as advised by others.

4. Laptop speed is an average.

5. Lightweight this is less than 4 Lbs as mentioned.

1. Toshiba have an TV ad for T135 - saying this will start working in 10 secs after you just close the LID, but its not true. This takes atleast a minute to show the screen. I guess the processor is pretty slow or un responding.

2. Wifi Card - Atheros is the utter flop and everytime i have to manually right click on the bar and say Troubleshoot problems. - 0 Star.

3. Web Cam is the most ugliest i have ever seen - Lots of Grains and its not clear., have to do lot of adjustments to make it seeable. - 0 Star.

4. Key board is the major Flaw, in my case the Down arrow and the Left arrow keys got struck and times not working.,

Alt + Spacebar combination is un-recognizable. - 0 Star

5. Touch Pad is a major major Flaw and very much Annoying., because of this i am giving the least star., Amazon should allow 0 stars. One single bar for LEft and Right click is very tough and needs lots of pressure to use. - 0 Star

6.Though this laptop runs silently at times Laptop gets heated for no reason. You cannot keep it in your Lap on that heat.

My sincere advise is please do not buy this Laptop and waste your time.

Amazon's customer service is pretty good as always. They sent me the return Lable to my mail ID today. So going to return this Laptop. These are my last words from the same Laptop.

update 12/24: to adjust speakers for very good sound this worked for me...control panel,

click on sound,

click on playback,

click on speaker, click on properties, click on enhancements & loudness equalization. then in properties click on aedvanced select 24 bit 4410000(studio quality). click on speaker set up select front left and right.

also, my battery is not getting 9 hours but eco mode seems to be best for battery length while multi-tasking.

my new toshiba t135-s1310 model cost $599 on amazon which is a nice price, usually it's $100 more plus tax if you go to the store. bestbuy does not carry this model as of this date. basically, this 13" laptop has bluetooth & hard drive stability which others in it's class do not have, so that's what helped me make my decision. also has 64 bit, ddr3, 4gb expandable to 8 gb, dual core, the comp tv interface, sleepcharge,long battery life and lightweight. i compared this model to acer4810tz-4508 which lacks bluetooth & harddrive stability tho is otherwise equivalent and asus UL30VT which has more power but costs at least a couple hundred dollars more. many other laptops at this pricepoint still have ddr2,or are 32 bit, or single core or are not expandable. this toshiba is the complete package.

i read all the reviews before my purchase so i had set-up tips in hand & followed those for audio, virus deletion & whatever else seemed applicable. i prefer a sensitive mousepad & have minimal issues w/ this pad. the charge cord is slim & light which is good for portability. i purchased the samsung external dvd drive model se-s084 which is plug&play & completely compatible for under $50 Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN (Gloss Black). this model fits in my purse which is cool. i bought the black since it is less high profile even tho i did consider the red when it was also $599 on amazon.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, but overall I like my T135-S1310. I like the size of the laptop and even the screen. It's big enough. I don't like that it's better for left-handed folks. I'm a righty. The USB ports, DC-IN, jacks, etc., which are on the right-hand side of the laptop should have been placed on the left-hand side to keep out of the way of using a mouse, wired or wireless. The ports, cooling vent, lock slot, etc. on the left-hand side should have been placed on the right, since they won't be used as often and therefore wouldn't be in the way. Also, the adapter cord is the cheapest I've ever seen and the print on the keys is very dull grey instead of bright white, which can strain the eyes in less than bright lighting.

"Great Form Factor for a Netbook +" 2009-12-12

The T135-S1310 has been great and really fits what I needed. I wanted more than a crappy netbook but also did not want a super bleeding edge $2K notebook. Full size keyboard was really a plus and I am sure glad a spent a little more for something completely useful.

The S1310 uses the new ultra low power dual core Pentium processor and scores 932 on Passmark. The laptop runs faster than my two year old Core Duo.

The size of the new screens is great and 13" is a true happy medium. These also make the overall machine size shallow so you have room on an airplane.

The finish is really cool looking but fingerprints abound on the lid, inside and even the keyboard - whatever!

Keyboard works pretty well if you are a soft touch typer and the keyboard layout is just fine with lots of reused keys to get all the functions. In one review there was no 'hardware' volume control (there is FN+3 / FN+4)

Screen is very glossy like many are. I have not owned a glossy screen laptop before and I find it somewhat irritating when sitting with a window at my back - its tolerable but I choose where I sit.

Preloaded software was minimal and getting the laptop stripped of all the extra junk was a small task. Once complete a set of back-up disks were made per the instructions.

I rarely if ever use a CD/DVD so this suite me well - not having to suffer the weight penalty. I purchased a 'LG GP08 Lite' which self-installed with Win 7 - I never used the software included and it was up and operating in minutes to burn back-up / restore media. [I did not purchase the Toshiba external device due to bad reviews]

Bluetooth seems to work great - you will want a portable mouse and my Logitech was connected easily to the T135-S1310.

Wireless N is much appreciated for both range and speed.

The touchpad like expressed in other reviews is not the best effort and way worse than my 5 year old laptop this replaced. My first T135-S1310 I returned for several reasons and the touchpad had serious latency [but not one of the reasons it was returned.] The replacement on which I am drafting this does not appear to suffer the same problem. The two were probably made on the same day in the factory and have the same drivers but even in eco mode it is responsive. The buttons are very hard to press and a tap on the touchpad is better than trying to use the mechanical switch.

Audio sucked at first - I did raise the graphic equalizer in "Smart Audio" / Smart EQ but this is just a work around for a bad driver that hopefully will be updated. [UPDATE 12/13/2009 - New Conexent Audio Driver Released, upgrade to rev. 4.98.16.61]

My first T135-S1310 had a couple of operational issues. The key one was flakey Wi-Fi. It would not stay connected to my D-Link 615 [Wireless N] while every other device in my house would....strange. Anyway this replacement is working fine.

Sleep Mode - The machine comes to life very fast and gets re-connected to the network before you can log yourself into Windows.

Form-factor is really great. The sloped or wedge design and lip from the battery give you something to safely rip and hand on to this glossy carbon fiber looking masterpiece: if you had wet or oily hands it is likely to slip out if you are not careful. Also it makes it very simple to pull out from your briefcase / laptop bag as you have something to really hang on to. I got a great little Sumdex bag for $17 which fits it great and has just enough room for a file folder or two, some paper and the charger + travel mouse.

Also on form factor, these laptops are just slightly larger than a sheet of (US) paper. What does this mean? It is essentially the same size as file folder which means you can fit a couple file folders, tablet of paper etc. in your tiny laptop bag and maybe only carry one thing with you.

Customer Service from Toshiba was pretty easy: they did not call me back as promised, but I think 2nd tier tech service read the notes and noted the file to replace the device which was hassle free.

Other Ports - Not yet tested / used.

So far I score this machine quite high. I love the form-factor, performance is just fine, Wireless N is great to have, screen is great, battery life is excellent. My only complaints which are minor are that its hard to keep clean (looking) due to fingerprints, the audio is marginal at best [better after new driver release from Toshiba], touchpad and related buttons should be better in 2009.

I do recommend this type of machine to those looking to not waste $3-475 for a pure netbook with a Atom processor (Passmark +- 300) and step up to a Netbook+ for a small amount more and get real performance AND great battery life. Spend the extra to get a dual core processor too and avoid the similar computers with the other processors like the SU2700 etc.

"Great Laptop with some drawbacks" 2009-12-13

This laptop was not my first choice when I was looking to purchase. I would have preferred the Asus UL series notebooks but the one I wanted was not in stock. Unfortunately I am going to be returning this laptop as its wireless NIC has extremely limited range leading me and toshiba(tech support) to believe that it has a faulty wireless nic. If the the wireless NIC had worked from the start I would have kept this laptop. Has anyone else gotten a laptop with a bad wireless nic?

I would recommend this laptop if it comes to you in working condition :). It comes at a great price point...

Aesthetically this laptop is quite pleasing, it matches my iphone with its silver trim and black high gloss finish. It is a fingerprint magnet. The white edition would make the keys easier to see in low light conditions.

I haven't done any rigorous testing or anything other than browsing with 5+ windows open, but it has performed quite well so far with my limited use.

The usb sleep and charge feature is quite handy when you are travelling but need to recharge another device using the machines battery.

The Screen is bright and sharp and I am quite pleased with it. Sound is weak without pumping up the smart audio equalizer settings which will lead to stress of your tiny laptop speakers.

It puzzles me that Toshiba chose to include windows 7 32bit edition when this laptop has a max ram capacity of 8g when the OS does not take advantage of this.

I read a caption from another that summarized this laptop up quite well, you can do alot worse than buying this laptop ;).

At first sight, this laptop is pretty stunning. Light, compact, thin, sleek. It is pretty full featured: 3gb ram, 500gb hard drive, wireless n, bluetooth, etc. However, it has some quirks that really irk me. As far as Windows 7 goes, I hate having to verify programs over and over, I think the start menu it shares with Vista is clunky and should go back to xp style, but that is an os issue. Now for my gripes with the hardware:

The speaker issue which has been well addressed in previous reviews so I will not get into it.

Webcam: default not set to night mode so if you are indoors forget about being able to see anything.

Facial Recognition: takes longer if not just as long to type in your password than to use this.

Keyboard: absolute fingerprint magnet

Touchpad issue: this made me want to literally slam it against a wall and return it. I think I have finally found a good solution to this problem. I followed the other reviewers instructions as far as deleting the drivers and reinstalling the default drivers. However, I found this to not fully solve the problem as I got sparatic movement and lost scroll and all functionality. So I searched and found an updated driver and installed, now I am a happy camper, as long as it stays working. I still hate the rocker button design, very dumb. Download the new driver here: [...]

"How to fix your Toshiba T135 touchpad" 2009-12-06

Firstly, definitely fix your sound setup as per JMesa's descrition.

[Also, JMesa, the units of power are Watts (W) not Volts (V), but

your numbers are otherwise correct.]

The quite miserable Touchpad response can be fixed in the following

manner. But please note that doing this will also lose the zoom and

rotate capability built into the as delivered Touchpad driver. I do

computer graphics and the tradoff of a far more usable Touchpad with

no rotate and zoom was well worth the switch. Perform the following

selections:

Start

Control Panel

Hardware and Sound

Device Manager (under Devices and Printers)

Mice and Other Pointing Devices

OK, from here on I cannot provide the exact names because having

already done this change the names are no longer available in the

menues for viewing.

Select the Touchpad and then the Touchpad Driver and then Delete it.

You will receive a warning but continue with the deletion. Then you

will have to reboot one or more times as Windows 7 detects the lack

of a Touchpad driver and simply installs its own driver. The Windows

7 Touchpad driver is more user friendly than what Toshiba provided,

but it does lack the rotate and zoom that very few would use anyway.

I bought this laptop for my spouse and she likes it after I fixed the

sound and Touchpad. It does have a really long operating time on the

battery when you set it up for minimal power usage.

i will only comment on some stuff that have not been mentioned in earlier reviews (unless i disagree with them), so it might be worth your while reading those, too.

if you tweak your audio as per an earlier review, the volume is incredible. i don't know how a little laptop can generate that much sound.

however, there isn't (or i haven't found it yet) a mechanical way to adjust volume. there is only a keyboard combination for mute or not-mute, but as far as i can tell one would have to adjust the volume from the desktop.

the integrated 1.3 MP webcam is not too bad; seems smart enough to adjust for low light.

the trackpad, as per earlier reviews, isn't well-designed. it takes some getting used to, but it's not impossible to work it.

the display is stunning.

it is not really ultraportable. it is very thin, yes, but still has some weight.

my only other complaint has to do with windows 7 and not the laptop: customizing the start menu (thank you very much microsoft, but i'd like to organize my links the way i want it, not the way you think i would want it.) used to be a cinch in XP and vista; in 7, i had to do some research at midnight just to figure out how to do it. and no, this information is sorely lacking in windows 7 help. sometimes, i do think windows can be very insulting/condescending.

update:

the display is really quite something: stunning.

the battery life is impressive (in eco mode, at least): i didn't think it was 9 hours, but i was doing a lot of things that one doesn't do everyday: defragment, backup, uninstall, install, virus scan, etc.

great for listening to your favorite playlist while practicing yoga.

also great for reading kindle books.

i'm not sure that sleep-and-charge works, although that could be because of the device i wanted to charge, and not the laptop.

one final update:

the battery life is impressive. however, the speakers seem to drain it far too quickly that i would have expected. i guess that's the price you pay for awesome audio.

This is my 3rd laptop, 2nd Toshiba. I got one of these on Black Friday for my son, and just ordered another for myself. I love Win 7! There is very little preloaded crap to remove and it is super fast. Having the numeric keypad on the side and an amazing screen add to its sheer awesomeness. The touchpad is ultra cool. I must agree with other reviewers that the sound is lacking, but I did not purchase the laptop to be my primary music player so I still gave it 5 stars. I was shocked when I first closed the laptop, being used to ones that latch. This one doesn't latch and the tension hinge (which keeps it closed in lieu of a latch) wants to slam shut in the last few inches, whereas those that latch have to be pushed all the way closed. It survived that rough close and my 1st Toshiba, four months old and running great for my college student, survived a 3 foot drop onto carpet. If a Toshiba can survive me, it has my loyalty.

I recieved the Toshiba just as advertised, it is very sturdy, actions are very smooth as laptops go. I really like the numberpad. It connected to my system without any problems. So far, I have nothing to report other than a very good product for a fair price. Actually Battery life is very acurately estimated! This is a true exception to the rule with laptops I have used in the past. They will state x number of hours of battery life on a charge and normally last about half of that time. This Toshiba states 2 hours and twenty five minutes, but it actually lasts that long!! It has been my experience that others advertise 4 hours and last less than 2.

I see this product rating a 5 after I have had it longer. So far it has been everything advertised and then some!!

I had looked for a while for a laptop after my desktop died and the Toshiba L505 series was one of my finalists. It has not disappointed me and at the price ($499) for the specs (4g ram/500g HD)it has been the a great machine.

One plus with this machine is that it came with very little "bloatware"- Norton trial, Microsoft Office 2007 trial, and some games. So, if you buy this machine at a "Box Store" don't let them con you into optimization for an extra $50-$100, you can do recovery disks and bloatware removal on your own.

The only downside is I really wish it had an HDMI output for streaming movies to my flat screen from places like Amazon, but the VGA or USB output will have to suffice.

No HDMI is only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, other machines in this range offer it and hope Toshiba will soon.
